About Us

CREATING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE FOR OUR STUDENT ATHLETES

Nutrition for Athletes strives to provide resources and education in creating healthy eating and living habits among the student athletes of La Jolla High School. Nutrition is crucial regarding athletic performance as it provides the necessary energy, nutrients, and hydration to optimize physical and mental function, support recovery and injury prevention, and achieve specific performance goals. Together we hope to make healthy eating as easy and as accessible as possible.

Why is Nutrition Important for Athletes?

1. Energy - Eating correctly provides the sufficient amount of calories that athletes require to fuel their training and performance. This includes carbohydrates, a primary source of energy to the human body, which helps athletes maintain energy levels during workouts and competitions.

2. Muscle Function - Getting the correct amount of protein is essential for the repair and growth of muscle tissue. Combining exercise with protein intake promotes muscle growth which is necessary to achieve peak athletic performance.

3. Recovery and Repair - Proper nutrition, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods can help to reduce muscle soreness and speed up the recovery process from training.

4. Endurance - Carbohydrates are the main source of energy and are critical for endurance in athletics. Carbohydrates are stored in the muscles and livers as glycogen, which eventually convert to glucose for energy during exercise. By consuming adequate carbohydrates, athletes can delay fatigue and perform at their best for longer games and practices.

5. Strength and Power - Micronutrients like calcium, magnesium and vitamin D are all vital for bone health and muscle function. All of these factors heavily contribute to performing well and feeling good during sports.

6. Mental Focus - Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and certain minerals are essential for mental focus, something that is often overlooked in sports. By incorporating nutrient-rich foods into diets, athletes can maintain mental clarity and concentration.

7. Injury Prevention - Proper nutrition can contribute to injury prevention by supporting bone health, muscle strength, and joint function. Making sure to eat properly is vital in preventing possible permanent damage.
